Title
Urging the City of Philadelphia to divest all business from the State of Arizona, until it repeals SB 1070, its discriminatory law targeting immigrants.
Body
WHEREAS, On April 23, 2010, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law SB 1070; and
WHEREAS, The Arizona law gives local police broad, unprecedented power to detain individuals based on the vague grounds of suspicion that they are undocumented, and criminalizes the failure to carry immigration documents; and
WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia recognizes the valuable contributions its immigrant residents make to the social, economic, and cultural life of the city and the country; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY PHILADELPHIA, That we emphatically urge the City of Philadelphia to immediately divest all business from the State of Arizona, and we urge Philadelphia's business community to reconsider any conferences, conventions, or other business transactions planned within the state of Arizona, until such time as Arizona repeals SB 1070.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That we urge Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to reconsider his decision to hold the 2011 All-Star game Arizona, given that 30% of baseball players are Latino and face the discriminatory enforcement of the Arizona law.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig.
