The Council of the City of Philadelphia recognizes and honors Malala Yousafzai for being the recipient of the 2026 WHYY Lifelong Learning Award for her contributions to the fundamental right to education for all individuals.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Malala’s core belief, that girls must possess the exact same opportunity as boys to learn, grow, and determine their own futures, aligns directly with WHYY’s mission to foster lifelong learning for everyone. Ms. Yousafzai provides a clear framework showing that when individuals receive educational empowerment, families thrive, regional economies grow stronger, and societies become more just; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2012, Malala survived a life-threatening attack aimed at silencing her voice, Ms. Yousafzai's chose to make her story not about violence but resilience, education and speaking out against evil. Her story demonstrated extraordinary resilience and transformed a moment of profound adversity into a worldwide movement; and

 

WHEREAS, Through the strategic initiatives of the Malala Fund, founded out of the proceeds of her book, she partners with global and local advocates to dismantle barriers and policy gaps that prevent girls from completing secondary school. Her methodical, enduring efforts earned her the distinction of becoming the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize; and

 

WHEREAS, Her work reinforces our shared belief that informed, educated communities form the foundation of a healthy and equitable society, strengthening civic engagement, economic mobility, and generational opportunity; and

 

WHEREAS, Malala Yousafzai’s unwavering commitment to education and human rights continues to inspire leaders, educators, and young people worldwide, serving as a powerful reminder that access to education is not only a fundamental right but also a catalyst for lasting global change; and

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and congratulates Malala Yousafzai for outstanding commitment to the right to education and the 2026 WHYY Lifelong Learning Award.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Malala Yousafzai in sincere gratitude for her exceptional achievements and as the recipient of the 2026 WHYY Lifelong Learning Award.
