Honoring and recognizing outstanding educators in the Ninth Councilmanic District for their leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to shaping the lives of young people and strengthening school communities through education, service, and opportunity.

WHEREAS, The Council of the City of Philadelphia recognizes that educators play a critical role in shaping the future of our city, serving not only as instructors, but also as mentors, role models, and trusted leaders who help young people develop discipline, confidence, resilience, creativity, and a sense of belonging; and
WHEREAS, Strong school communities are built through the collective efforts of educators who go beyond the classroom to support students’ academic success, social-emotional growth, and overall well-being, while also fostering meaningful connections between schools, families, and the broader community; and
WHEREAS, In the Ninth Councilmanic District, educators continue to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to student achievement and community impact, dedicating their time, talent, and personal resources to ensure that young people feel seen, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential; and
WHEREAS, Shakir “Shock” Johnson, Head Boys Basketball Coach at Olney High School, has served as a mentor and leader for student-athletes, investing in their development both on and off the court, while expanding opportunities for youth through his work in athletics and community programming; and
WHEREAS, Jamel Lindsey, Head Coach of the Boys’ Basketball Team at Samuel Fels High School and a proud alumnus, has demonstrated a full-circle commitment to his school community by fostering student growth, strengthening school culture, and bridging connections between students, families, and the broader community; and
WHEREAS, Ezechial Thurman, Music Technology Teacher at Hill-Freedman World Academy, has enriched the educational experience of students through music, innovation, and student-centered learning, creating platforms for creative expression and empowering young people to discover their voices and talents; and
WHEREAS, Collectively, these educators represent the transformative power of education, demonstrating that teaching extends far beyond instruction and into the lifelong impact educators have on the confidence, direction, and success of the young people they serve; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and recognizes Shakir “Shock” Johnson, Jamel Lindsey, and Ezechial Thurman for their dedicated service, leadership, and lasting impact as educators in the Ninth Councilmanic District, and expresses the sincere admiration and appreciation of this legislative body for their commitment to the students, families, and communities they serve.
