Honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Michael A. Schiavone, D.D.S., beloved husband, father, and co-founder of Caring for Friends, and recognizing his lifetime commitment to feeding the hungry and caring for those in need.

WHEREAS, Dr. Michael A. Schiavone, DDS, born January 1, 1933, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of ninety-three. Michael was the dear son of the late Generoso and Grazia Schiavone, and the brother of the late Jenny, the late Samuel, and the late Jerry; and
WHEREAS, Michael was the president of his Central High School class, Class 193, and was a graduate of Temple University and the Temple University School of Dentistry. Michael was the beloved husband of the late Rita Ungaro Schiavone, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. They met on the train to Temple University and were inseparable from that day until Rita passed away nine years ago. Michael looked forward to being with Rita for all eternity; and
WHEREAS, Michael was the devoted father of Michael A. Schiavone II, M.D. (Barbara Luther), Vincent J. Schiavone (Linda), Joseph J. Schiavone (Ann), and Steven M. Schiavone, Esq. (Terry Andros), the proud and loving Pop Pop of Nicole Wenger (Joseph), Michael Joseph (Kristen), Matt, Michael Angelo III, Peter, and Grace, and the cherished great-grandfather of Joseph, Emmalynn, and Joshua Wenger; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Schiavone lived a life defined by devotion to his family, his faith, compassion for others, and dedication to his profession. Michael was the co-founder, frequent funder, chief volunteer, and lifelong board member of Aid For Friends, now known as Caring for Friends; and
WHEREAS, Michael was a respected dentist who started a free dental clinic at St. Vincent’s Orphanage and provided dentistry without cost to many of the area’s nuns, priests, and patients who could not afford to pay. Michael cared for generations of patients, many of whom became his friends. He had a warm heart, sense of humor, and a smile for all. He never counted what he gave. Michael lived his faith his entire life and treated everyone with kindness; and
WHEREAS, Relatives and friends gathered for his viewing and Funeral Mass on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at St. Jerome Church, 8100 Colfax Street, Philadelphia, with interment at Resurrection Cemetery; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors the life and legacy of Dr. Michael A. Schiavone, DDS, and extend its deepest condolences to his family and friends; and, be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Michael A. Schiavone, DDS, as evidence of the sincere sentiment of this legislative body.
