Declaring May 10, 2024 as “Child Care Provider Appreciation Day in the City of Philadelphia, and recognizing the essential value that child care providers have in our community.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Child Care Aware of America and other organizations nationwide, including Voice of ECE in Philadelphia, are recognizing Child Care Providers on this day; and   

 

WHEREAS, Child care is the backbone of a healthy family and a healthy economy. Child care providers create conditions for child development and a safe, nurturing environment for children to grow and learn. Child care is critical for parents to work and sustain a job, and child care itself creates millions of jobs and billions of dollars of economic contribution annually. Early child care support systems and high-quality child care reduces the gap between children across the socioeconomic spectrum, leading to additional opportunities in literacy, math, science, and socialization. Child care has provided a safe, nurturing place for the enrichment and development of millions of children nationwide and is a vital force in our economy; and 

 

WHEREAS, The pandemic illuminated how indispensable child care providers are for the well-being and economic security of Philadelphia, young children, families, and communities; and   

 

WHEREAS, Child care programs, which are mostly small businesses, run and staffed predominantly by women, continue to recover from the health and financial hardships stemming from the pandemic to meet the needs of more families; and 

 

WHEREAS, Philadelphia recognizes that child care has been and continues to be a lifeline for families, communities, and the economy. As such, it has provided much-needed support to providers to help sustain the viability of child care by improving paid sick leave and passing historic protections including a Bill of Rights for domestic workers, and through expanding PHL preK and Philadelphia’s Early learning Resource Center (ELRC); and

 

WHEREAS, We celebrate and honor the work of child care providers, funders and advocates in Philadelphia and recognize those who are working to elevate the field of early childhood education for funding, policy, and labor rights, including Adrienne Briggs, Owner/Director of Lil’ Bits Family Child Care Home; Dr. Leslie Spina, ED of Kinder Academy; Laverne Cheeseboro, Owner/Director Heavenly Made Creations, Khadijah Sabir, ECE Advocate; Unis Bey, ED of Grays Ferry Early Learning Center; Minnette Taylor, Mini Montessori Academy; SEPECC (Southeastern Pennsylvania Early Child Care Coalition) the William Penn Foundation; Vanguard Foundation; Children First; PHMC; Reinvestment Fund; HomeGrown; QIP; The Kimble Group; Family Childcare Coalition; The Education Institute for Early Intervention (EIEI); LEJ; First Up; United Way, and the Black Child Development Institute Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, The future depends on the quality of the early childhood experiences provided to young children today; support for high-quality child care represents a worthy commitment to our children’s future; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby declares May 10, 2024 as Child Care Provider Appreciation Day in the City of Philadelphia, recognizes the essential value that child care providers have in our community.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to members of Voice of ECE, further evidencing the sincere respect of this legislative body.
