Recognizing, Congratulating, and Honoring the Frankford High School Pioneers Baseball Team on winning the 2018 Philadelphia Public League Championship.

WHEREAS, Frankford High School has a long and rich reputation in both the academic and athletic field. The Frankford Pioneers baseball program has led the school’s Athletic Department with an amazing run, winning a total of twenty Philadelphia Public League Championship titles; the most in the history of the league; and
WHEREAS, Upon entering the playoffs, the Frankford Pioneers Baseball Team were faced with a daunting task of having to win seven games in two weeks in order to be crowned champions. And that’s exactly what they did. As fate would have it, the championship would have the Frankford Pioneers meeting the Lancers of Central High School, the team’s lone loss of the whole year. After an epic battle, the Pioneers raised the Princeton Cup in a thrilling 5 to 4 come from behind victory; and
WHEREAS, The Frankford High School’s Pioneers Baseball Team has not only demonstrated dedication on the field, as they had an outstanding season which led them to the playoffs, but off the field as they coordinated a number of fundraisers throughout the year, putting the needs of the community first before the game of baseball; and
WHEREAS, Frankford High School has captured the attention of the City, State, and a number of colleges for the achievement of their players both on and off the field for their academic success and their involvement in their community; and
WHEREAS, In the 2018 season not only did the Frankford Pioneers repeat as the Philadelphia Public League Champions, but the team also celebrated the Northeast Times Player of the year, and pitcher of the year, Luis Ramos (Junior), as well as the Public League Division MVP, Rico Lugo (Junior); and
WHEREAS, Not only did the players achieve incredible accomplishments this season, but Coach Juan Namnun was also named Baseball Coach of the Year by the Northeast Times, as well as the Philadelphia Coaches Association. Coach Namnun, with his sixth championship win, became the most successful coach in the history of Philadelphia baseball and now holds the record for most championships by a coach in Philadelphia baseball history; and
WHEREAS, Coach Namnun, an alumnus of Frankford High School, became the head coach ten years ago in 2008 where he went on to win his first championship that year. Of the twenty-one Philadelphia Public League Championship titles that the Frankford Pioneers hold, Coach Namnun has been a part of the team for eleven of them; and
WHEREAS, This year’s seniors and members of the 2018 Philadelphia Public League Championship team include Captain Kashene Colson, Dioanny Mejia, Tyler Montilla, Walter Pommer IIII, Jason DeJesus; and
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes, congratulates, and honors the Frankford High School Pioneers on a successful baseball season ending the season by repeating as Public League Champions.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Frankford High School Pioneers Baseball Team as evidence of the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
