Declaring July 2, 2002 as Union Summer Day in Philadelphia.

Body

                     WHEREAS, Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Young people thrive in situations that provide opportunities to develop responsible leadership skills; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer encourages college students to develop analytical and communication skills, among others, and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer provides college students an opportunity to create positive change in the lives of working Americans; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer provides young people with an opportunity to work directly on behalf of bedrock American principles, such as fairness, social and economic justice; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer gives young people experiences to better understand the American commitment to diversity and tolerance by working with people of different races, ethnicity, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer interns have a unique opportunity to visit with working families in their homes and at work; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer puts students in contact with elected leaders; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer interns gain valuable experience helping plan and execute public events; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer interns participate in building coalitions among workers, community members, and religious leaders to help working families build better lives; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Union summer brings committed young people together in a positive environment that helps redouble their dedication to helping ensure equal opportunity and economic security for all Americans; now therefore

 

                     RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That July 2, 2002, is declared Union Summer Day in Philadelphia to honor of all the young people who, while participating in the AFL-CIO Union Summer program, are affirming and enriching the American tradition of grassroots democracy to assist working men and women exercise their American right to fully participate in the economy their work helps generate and sustain; and

 

                     FURTHER RESOLVED, That in honor of these young people and the work that they are involved in protecting and extending the rights of working people that an engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Philadelphia AFL-CIO in their honor.
