Honoring and celebrating the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Philadelphia Chapter, for their dedication to the youth, through their advocacy for education, nonviolence and community service.
 
Body
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the NAACP has been committed to fighting for the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights for all persons, and the elimination of race-based discrimination and has been very active, organizing many events to help promote and defend civil rights within the City; and
 
WHEREAS, The NAACP Philadelphia Chapter is one of the oldest, and largest NAACP chapters and has a rich history of prominent local leaders, including former City Councilman Cecil B. Moore, who served as its president, and caused membership to double under his administration; and
 
WHEREAS, Presently, the NAACP Philadelphia Chapter, is committed to healthcare reform, education funding, voter suppression and promoting nonviolence, hosting a Prayer Vigil & Stop the Violence Rally in 2012 and organizing “The Open Mic Night”, a charity fundraiser for medical supplies and therapy for Patricia Rainey, a victim of gun violence; and
 
WHEREAS, The NAACP Philadelphia Chapter is now hosting “Hands Across Philadelphia”, an event forming a human chain, stretching from Woodland Avenue to 52nd and Parkside. The purpose is to demonstrate and promote community service, education, and nonviolence; and
 
WHEREAS, “Hands Across Philadelphia” promotes nonviolence and unity by bringing together multiple non-profit and community-based organizations such as, the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, Mothers in Charge, numerous churches, as well as civic and community stakeholders; now, therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council hereby recognizes, honors and thanks the NAACP Philadelphia Chapter for their outstanding service to the community, and for their devotion to the youth, through their tireless advocacy for education, nonviolence and community service.
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the NAACP Philadelphia Chapter as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
