Recognizing February 20^th, 2025 as World Day of Social Justice in the City of Philadelphia.

Body

WHEREAS, Social justice refers to the equitable and fair distribution of wealth, opportunities, resources, and privileges within a society where individuals’ rights are protected and recognized; and

WHEREAS, World Day of Social Justice observed around the world on February 20^th to recognize the importance of social justice issues such as human rights, poverty, unemployment, gender inequality, and exclusion. World Day of Social Justice was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to remind the world of the need to build a fairer and more equitable world, and to urge nations and communities to combat unemployment and poverty; and

WHEREAS, The International Labour Organization (ILO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, facilitates the World Day of Social Justice to work on a global level to achieve gender equity, promote full employment and decent work, ensure access to social well-being and justice for all, and to combat poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion; and

WHEREAS, The World Day of Social Justice 2025 is organized on the theme, “Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice”, to emphasize the need for inclusive actions and policies to achieve social justice for all and social protections to combat systemic inequality; and

WHEREAS, As the United Nations is committed to promoting the advancement of human rights, social protections, and justice and equity among developed and developing nations, so too must we promote equity and justice for the City of Philadelphia. It is imperative that this legislative body take action to reduce poverty and unemployment in the City of Philadelphia; address displacement and economic injustice; reduce gun violence, traffic violence and other public health crises; and promote equity and the creation of a more just Philadelphia for future generations to come; now therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes February 20^th, 2025 as World Day of Social Justice in the City of Philadelphia.
