Title

Honoring and recognizing BalletX, on its 20th Anniversary, for its outstanding contributions to contemporary ballet and the cultural life of Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, BalletX was founded in 2005 by Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan as a choreographic playground to push beyond the boundaries of classical ballet through experimentation, collaboration, and innovation. At the time of its founding, there was a void for contemporary ballet in Philadelphia and BalletX quickly emerged as a pioneer, expanding opportunities for dancers and choreographers to create, perform, and present new works to the City and beyond; and

 

WHEREAS, BalletX has grown over two decades from as small collective of friends into one of Philadelphia’s most vital and innovative cultural institutions, earning recognition nationally and internationally for artistic excellence and creative daring; and

 

WHEREAS, Through the leadership of Artistic and Executive Director Christine Cox, BalletX has commissioned and produced more than 150 world premieres by over 80 choreographers, helping to expand and redefine the canon of 21st Century ballet; and

 

WHEREAS, BalletX is one of the few companies in the nation that employs its 16 dancers year-round further reflecting upon its deep commitment to both its artists and its mission. This company is widely recognized as a commissioning powerhouse, praised by critics for presenting the work of living choreographers with energy and innovation that connects deeply with audiences; and

 

WHEREAS, BalletX is committed to the next generation through robust education and community engagement programs including Dance exchange which brings dance into Philadelphia public schools and inspires creativity, confidence, and teamwork amongst students. The company also offers free virtual learning resources, extending access to dance education far beyond the theater ensuring that young people, families, and educators everywhere can experience the joy of movement; and

 

WHEREAS, BalletX celebrates its 20th Anniversary, the City of Philadelphia proudly recognizes the company’s extraordinary contributions to the arts, its impact on generations of dancers and audiences, and its role in shaping the cultural fabric of our City; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and recognizes BalletX on its 20th anniversary for its outstanding contributions to contemporary ballet and the cultural life of Philadelphia.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to BalletX as evidence of the admiration and respect of this legislative body.
