Honoring Woodie C. Marcus Sr.

Body

WHEREAS, The Council of the City of Philadelphia is pleased and proud to honor Police Officer Woodie C. Marcus Sr., Badge #5861, on 42 years of dedicated service to the City of Philadelphia as a Philadelphia Police Officer; and

 

WHEREAS, Officer Marcus was born in Philadelphia and is a graduate of Germantown High School who later attended Idaho State College on a varsity boxing scholarship before taking the police department exam and being called to duty in 1963; and

 

WHEREAS, Officer Marcus has been assigned to the Police Athletic League (“PAL”) since 1967 where he has helped hundreds of young people become working, tax-paying citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, Some of the young people Officer Marcus assisted in PAL are now Police Officers, State Troopers, Prison Guards and Firefighters themselves which gives credence to his belief that PAL is one of the best crime prevention agencies in the City of Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, As a result of his hard work, dedication, and determination throughout the years, Officer Marcus has been inducted into the Philadelphia Police Athletic League Hall of Fame; and

 

WHEREAS, Officer Marcus’s amateur boxing career spans from his winning the Philadelphia AAU boxing lightweight championship, the Elco Nevado AAU championship and the United States National Amateur Lightweight Championship in 1961; and

 

WHEREAS, Officer Marcus no longer boxes but, he has kept his affiliation with boxing by serving as a referee and judge for amateur boxing bouts with some of the greatest boxers of all times including Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael and Leon Spinks, Tommy Hearns, Oscar De La Hoya and many more; now therefore

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby congratulate Police Officer Woodie C. Marcus, Sr., Badge #5861, on 42 years of dedicated service to the City of Philadelphia as a Philadelphia Police Officer.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Woodie C. Marcus, Sr. as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
