Title

Honoring and Recognizing the runners who competed in the 2024 Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run as well as the dedicated work of the Special Events Emergency Medical Technician Team who were responsible for keeping the race a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

 

Body

WHEREAS, The first Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run took place in 1980, with 1,458 men and 122 women running along Broad Street. Typically, the race takes place on the first Sunday in May, and runners will travel across 10 miles through the heart of Philadelphia; and 

 

WHEREAS, The annual Race begins at Central High School in the Logan neighborhood of Philadelphia. There, runners will stretch, hydrate, and prepare to cross many historical landmarks within the City, such as Temple University, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Kimmel Center, and City Hall; and

 

WHEREAS, After their ten mile race, runners end at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where they are greeted by hundreds of cheering spectators celebrating their hard-fought victories; and

 

WHEREAS, The Broad Street Run has become one of the largest and most well-known races in Philadelphia, bringing out thousands of runners each year. It is known for its flat course that carries seasoned and beginner runners through a diverse City, such as Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, The 2024 Broad Street Run began on May 5, 2024, at 7:30 a.m., and throughout the course of the rainy day, 40,000 runners made their way from Central High School to the Navy Yard. Overall, Kevin McDonnell won the overall male category with a chip time of 47:32:32, Amber Zimmerman won the overall female category with a 52:51:16 Chip Time, and Winter Parts won the overall non-binary category with a Chip Time of 52:38:10; and 

 

WHEREAS, With many runners joining in, there can be possible health issues. As a result, the dedicated staff of the Special Events Emergency Medical Technician Team is responsible for keeping all runners and spectators safe throughout the day. Through heat related illnesses, exhaustion, falls, and even heart attacks, the diligent and caring work of the Special Events EMT’s cannot be overstated, and their work should be commemorated and honored; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors and recognizes the runners who competed in the 2024 Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run as well as the dedicated work of the Special Events Emergency Medical Technician Team who were responsible for keeping the race a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented as a sign of the admiration and respect of this legislative body.
