Acknowledging and commending parents in Philadelphia who uphold responsibility by reporting their children’s involvement in criminal activities.

 

Body

WHEREAS, There are parents and guardians in our City who, despite the deep emotional and personal challenges they may face, demonstrate great strength and moral conviction by making the difficult decision to report their children’s involvement in criminal activity when they become aware of it, recognizing the importance of justice, community safety, and the potential for growth and change; and

 

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia recognizes and honors the vital role that parents and guardians play in shaping the lives of their children, serving as the first educators, protectors, and role models who influence their children's development, behavior, and choices; and

 

WHEREAS, The safety, security, and well-being of the community depend not only on law enforcement and public services but also on the active involvement of families in fostering positive values such as honesty, accountability, and respect for the rule of law; and

 

WHEREAS, Philadelphia police announced charges against six teenagers accused of randomly attacking multiple people during the middle of the day in Center City in November of 2024. On November 21st and 22nd, the teenagers, along with their parents, turned themselves in to the police; and

 

WHEREAS, These parents demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to their children’s future, showing that true love and care sometimes involve tough choices aimed at ensuring their children are held accountable for their actions while also offering them an opportunity for growth, learning, and rehabilitation; and

 

WHEREAS, In taking such steps, these parents not only demonstrate personal integrity but also set an example of responsibility, courage, and moral clarity for other families, friends, and neighbors, contributing to the collective effort to build a stronger, safer, and more supportive community in Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, There are several organizations that focus on youth crime prevention for parents in Philadelphia to utilize if they believe their child is involved in criminal activity. These include

YEAH Philly, the NOMO Foundation, and Unity in the Community; and

 

WHEREAS, The act of reporting one’s own child for criminal behavior, while undoubtedly painful, is an important reflection of the shared values that hold families, neighborhoods, and society together-values of fairness, integrity, and respect for the law that strengthen our City’s ability to support all its residents, particularly its most vulnerable, in finding a path to a better future. now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Formally recognizes, commends, and expresses our deepest gratitude to all parents and guardians who, in the face of difficult circumstances, demonstrate the courage and moral strength to prioritize justice, community safety, and the well-being of their children and the broader community by reporting their children's involvement in criminal activities.
