Recognizing, Honoring, And Celebrating the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger - For All Their Efforts in fighting hunger in Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger traces its roots to the late 1970s, when several local anti-hunger organizations started working together to combat hunger in the region; and
WHEREAS, In 1996, the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger was formally established to advocate on hunger at the local, state and federal levels; and
WHEREAS, In addition to their advocacy work, the Coalition Against Hunger supports the food pantries and soup kitchens that form vital safety nets in the communities through their Hunger Fighters Network; and
WHEREAS, There is no magic bullet to end hunger in our region and the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger has taken a comprehensive, multipronged approach to fighting hunger that includes education, outreach and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, Through their Hunger Fighters Network, the Coalition supports many of the 700 food pantries in the region and provides them with funding, training and other resources, so they can feed more people more efficiently and strengthen their communities; and
WHEREAS, Through their SNAP (Food Stamp) Campaign, the Coalition helps eligible Philadelphians apply for SNAP and since 2002, they have assisted nearly 40,000 families and continue to screen 7,000 residents every year, mainly through their Food Stamp (SNAP) Hotline; and
WHEREAS, Through their Policy Center, the Coalition applies the data and experiences gained on the front lines to advocate for responsible policies that meet the real need in their communities and advocate on city, state and national issues that affect hunger; and
WHEREAS, The Coalition builds the capacity of food pantries and soup kitchens, so these vital programs can feed more people who urgently need food.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That City Council Hereby Recognize, Honor, And Celebrate the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger - For All Their Efforts in fighting hunger in Philadelphia.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Carey Morgan, Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger as further evidencing the sincere admiration and gratitude of this legislative body.
