Honoring those groups and individuals who have all collaborated and contributed to the success of the “Get The Guns Off The Street” campaign.

WHEREAS, Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, the Philadelphia Police Department, Men United for A Better Philadelphia, David Frascella of Cash Today Financial Center, and Jason Lutz, owner of Sneaker Villa announced a citywide gun turn-in program on Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 8th and Race Streets. The program allows any citizen turning in an illegal gun to any police district throughout the city to receive $100 in cash and a $50 gift certificate redeemable at any Sneaker Villa Store; and
WHEREAS, Only one week after its introduction, the number of guns turned into police districts throughout the city numbered over nine hundred; and
WHEREAS, In response to the tremendous success of the “Get The Guns Off The Street” campaign Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson realized he needed more funding to support the continuation of the program; and
WHEREAS, David Frascella and Jason Lutz, both answered the call for additional funding by offering to double their original gift of $25,000 each to a total of $50,000 each; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of the city are extremely grateful to Mr. Frascella and Mr. Lutz for their generous contributions with a combined total of $100,000; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and commend Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, the Philadelphia Police Department, Men United for a Better Philadelphia, David Frascella of Cash Today Financial Center and Jason Lutz owner of Sneaker Villa for their tremendous support of the “Get The Guns Off The Street” campaign. Through their collaborative effort this campaign is exceeding expectations and making our City a safer place.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That Engrossed copies of this resolution be presented as evidence of the sincere sentiment of this legislative body.
