Honoring and congratulating the Champions of the Week, Father Judge High School baseball team, for their victory at the 2023 PIAA title baseball game, marking the first time a Philadelphia team has won a state baseball championship.

WHEREAS, Father Judge High School, in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia, took home the top prize in the PIAA Class 6A baseball title game; and
WHEREAS, The team had an impressive record of 25 wins and 2 losses in the PIAA District XII and 11 wins, 1 loss in the Philadelphia Catholic League. The team’s competitor, Mt. Lebanon High School, had an undefeated record this season, meaning Father Judge’s victory all the more impressive; and
WHEREAS, Along with the state championship, Father Judge also won the PIAA District XII title and the Catholic League title; and
WHEREAS, Father Judge baseball is the first program in the city’s history to win a PIAA 6A state championship. This team is only the second state championship for any sport in the school’s history; and
WHEREAS, Pitcher David Rodriguez shined: he threw a 1-run complete game with 8 strikeouts, and allowed only 6 hits. Brooks Henderson excelled on offense, slating 3 hits and scoring 2 runs. Anthony Jakeman drove in 2 runs with a double, and Sean Moore had an RBI single. Nick Shiffler; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of the playoffs, Father Judge defeated Plymouth-Whitemarsh 12-1, Central Bucks West 1-0, and North Penn 4-1; and
WHEREAS, The final score of the PIAA Class 6A state baseball title was Father Judge, 4, to Mt. Lebanon, 1; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby congratulate and honor the Champions of the Week, the Father Judge High School baseball team, for their victory at the 2023 PIAA title baseball game, marking the first time a Philadelphia team has won a state baseball championship.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an engrossed copy be presented to the Father Judge High School baseball team, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
