Congratulating the Philadelphia Wings on winning the National Lacrosse League Championship for the sixth time on April 27, 2001.

Body

WHEREAS, On April 27, 2001, the Philadelphia Wings defeated the two-time defending Champion, Toronto Rock, 9-8, before 19,409 fans at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada;

 

WHEREAS, The Wings victory was their first at the home of the Rock.  Prior to this game the Wings were 1-6 lifetime against the Rock, including playoff losses in 1999 and 2000 and two losses earlier this season; and

 

WHEREAS, This is the sixth World Championship for the Wings; they also won the title in 1989, 1990, 1994, 195 and 1998; and

 

WHEREAS, The Wings started quickly in the Championship game and led 6-2 at halftime on goals by Mark Millon (2), Tom Phair (2), Jake Bergey (2nd team All-Pro) and Rookie, Jeff Ratcliffe.  Goalie Dallas Elliuk made 20 saves during the first half; and

 

WHEREAS, Team Philadelphia continued their domination of the game in the 3rd period with Tom Millon adding a goal for a hat-trick and First Team All-Pro Tom Marechek netting his first point of the game to end the scoring at 8-3; and

 

WHEREAS, Tom Marechek scored his 2nd goal of the game in the last period although Toronto fought back valiantly and scored their last goal with less than one second remaining to make the final 9-8 in favor of the Champion Philadelphia Wings; and

 

WHEREAS, During the season the Wings were lead by Tom Marachek, Jake Bergey, Kevin Finneran, Mark Millon, Jeff Ratcliffe, Jason Clarke, Goalie Dallas Eliuk and many other fine players who contributed to this championship season; now therefore

 

WHEREAS, We congratulate Head Coach Tony Resch and his excellent staff for their hard work and outstanding coaching.  President Russ Cline and General Manager Jim Rogers are to be commended for the continued success of the Wings; and

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we congratulate the Philadelphia Wings on winning the National Lacrosse League Championship for the sixth time on April 27, 2001.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Philadelphia Wings Championship Lacrosse Team further evidencing the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
