Title

Honoring Power 99 on the occasion of the station’s 40th Anniversary and commending the station for its remarkable contributions to Philadelphia’s community and culture and to the field of radio broadcasting.

 

Body

WHEREAS, WUSL, better known as Power 99, the iconic radio station in Philadelphia, has proudly served the community for 40 years, offering music, entertainment, news, and a platform for local voices to be heard; and

 

WHEREAS, Power 99 emerged as an urban station in October 1982, and that same year the station began presenting its annual major concert event, "PowerHouse". Some notable hosts and programs include Glen 'Golden Boy' Cooper, DC Todd, Tiffany Bacon, The Rise N Grind Morning Show, BJ in the Morning, Carter & Sanborn, “Lady B” Clark, Barbara Sommers, Loraine Ballard Morrill, DJ Cosmic Kev, DJ Diamon Kutz, Colby Colb and Wendy Williams; and

 

WHEREAS, WUSL has also been instrumental in helping to birth the careers of several influential Philadelphia Hip Hop and R&B artists, including but not limited to...DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Floetry, Eve, Beanie Siegel, Freeway, Young Guns, Cassidy, and Meek Mill; and

 

WHEREAS, WUSL has won numerous awards for its news and public affairs programming, a hallmark of which was their Sunday morning programming. The station has received a record seven National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Award for Service to the Community and the inaugural NAB Crystal Heritage Award when it was the first station in the nation to receive five “Crystals”; and

 

WHEREAS, The station has consistently celebrated the vibrant culture and diversity of Philadelphia, showcasing the City's musical talents and reflecting the pulse of the community. Power 99 has earned the loyalty and respect of its listeners in the Philadelphia region, becoming a cherished part of their daily lives; and

 

WHEREAS, Power 99 has consistently provided top-notch entertainment, informed the public, and fostered a sense of community through its diverse programming and engagement initiatives; and

 

WHEREAS, Power 99 has been a beacon of excellence in radio broadcasting, upholding high standards of professionalism, creativity, and commitment to its audience; and

 

WHEREAS, Power 99 has earned the respect and admiration of its listeners, advertisers, and the broader community through its dedication to delivering quality content and maintaining a strong connection with its audience; now, therefore, be it 

 

RESOLVED, That the City Council of Philadelphia hereby honors Power 99 on the occasion of the station’s 40th Anniversary and commends the station for its remarkable contributions to Philadelphia’s community and culture and to the field of radio broadcasting.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to WUSL, Power 99 FM, as evidence of the admiration and respect of this body.
