Calling on City Council’s Housing, Neighborhood Development and Homeless Committee to hold hearings on the redevelopment of the 4600 Block of Sansom Street between 46th Street and Farragut Street and the 100 Block of 46th Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets.

Body

WHEREAS, The Sansom Street Project sponsored by The Partnership CDC seeks to radically transform the 4600 Block of Sansom Street and 46th  Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets into one of the most desirable residential locations in West Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, Currently, there are 30 severely blighted and structurally deteriorated properties that several outside engineers have claimed will collapse at any moment and of which eleven are occupied; and

 

WHERAS, The Partnership CDC has counseled the residents and have found that many would either like to permanently relocate or temporarily relocate with an understanding that they will be offer first right of refusal to the new homes; and

 

WHEREAS, The Partnership CDC with strong support from community organizations such as the Spruce Hill Community Association, Walnut Hill Community Association, The Sansom Street Community Coalition, A.J.C.P. Mosque, and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as with strong financial support from Habitat for Humanity, The Reinvestment Fund and the William Penn Foundation, will develop 29 new single family homes on the 4600 Block of Sansom Street and on the 100 block of South 46th Street; and

 

WHEREAS, At the end of this redevelopment process, blight will be completely eradicated from this redevelopment area, a vision that is consistent with NTI as well as addresses the concerns of citizens and civic leaders who see the urgent necessity of retaining families in the city while at the same time, continuing to create affordable homeownership opportunities for low-to moderate income families; now therefore

 

RESOLVED, The City Council Committee on Housing, Neighborhood Development and Homelessness calls for hearings on the redevelopment of the 4600 Block of Sansom Street between 46th Street and Farragut Street and the 100 Block of 46th Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets.
