Recognizing and honoring the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) for its unwavering commitment to empowering women, strengthening families, advancing educational and economic opportunities, promoting health equity, advocating for social justice, and uplifting communities

 

Body

WHEREAS, The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) is comprised of nearly 400 campus and community-based sections and 38 national women's organizations, representing nearly three million women and men united in service, advocacy, and leadership; and

 

WHEREAS, Founded in 1935 by the visionary educator, civil rights leader, and presidential advisor Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, the National Council of Negro Women was established to unite African American women and organizations to improve the quality of life for women, families, and communities while advancing equal rights and opportunities; and

 

WHEREAS, Guided by its motto, "Commitment, Unity, and Self-Reliance," NCNW remains steadfast in its mission to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families, and communities through education, service, and civic engagement; and

 

WHEREAS, NCNW's work is grounded in four core priorities, education, healthcare, economic justice, and social justice, which serve as the foundation for innovative programs that address the needs of communities while creating pathways toward equity and opportunity; and

 

WHEREAS, The organization actively promotes civic participation and public policy advocacy by providing educational resources and toolkits focused on gun violence awareness and prevention, voting rights, voter engagement, redistricting, democracy, and social justice, empowering communities to participate fully in the democratic process; and

 

WHEREAS, Through volunteerism, advocacy, leadership development, and collaborative community service, NCNW's local sections work tirelessly on the front lines to strengthen families, expand educational opportunities, promote economic stability, and improve the health and well-being of communities throughout Pennsylvania and across the nation; and

 

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Coalition and its sections continue to exemplify the mission and legacy of NCNW by advancing programs, partnerships, and initiatives that enrich the lives of residents throughout the Commonwealth while serving as trusted advocates for women, children, families, and communities; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes and honors the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. for more than ninety years of transformative leadership, advocacy, service, and empowerment, and celebrates its enduring contributions to the advancement of women of African descent, their families, and communities.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to the Pennsylvania State Coalition of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. as evidence of the sincere respect, admiration, and appreciation of City Council.
