Honoring and celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Taller Puertorriqueño, Inc. for its remarkable contributions to the cultural, educational, and artistic enrichment of Philadelphia's Latino and broader communities.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Taller Puertorriqueño was founded 50 years ago on December 4, 1974, in the heart of Philadelphia’s Latino community, has served as a pillar of cultural pride and empowerment for five decades; and

 

WHEREAS, Taller Puertorriqueño, also known as “El Corazón Cultural del Barrio,” was established with a mission to preserve, develop, and promote Puerto Rican arts and culture, while providing a welcoming space for the exchange of cultural ideas and expressions from diverse

Latino communities; and

 

WHEREAS, Domingo Negron and Rick Hall are founders of Taller Puertorriqueño which was established in 1974 by Puerto Rican and Latino artists and activists in Philadelphia; and Johnny Irizarry, Dr. Carmen Febo-San Miguel, Nasheli Juliana Ortiz González, Pedro Perez, and Carmen Puigdollers have all contributed to the expansion of Taller Puertorriqueño under their leadership as executive directors; and

 

WHEREAS, For 50 years, Taller Puertorriqueño has continued to be a vital resource for progress in the Philadelphia Barrio and the region. It is now recognized as a model organization that uses the arts as a vehicle for social change. It is also the largest Puerto Rican/Latino-based arts and cultural facility in the state of Pennsylvania; and

 

WHEREAS, The 50th Anniversary Gala will serve as a momentous occasion to recognize Taller Puertorriqueño’s key milestones and honor the individuals and partners who have contributed to its success, while raising critical funds to ensure the future sustainability of its programming and outreach efforts; and

 

WHEREAS, In recognition of its 50th anniversary, Taller Puertorriqueño is being honored not only for its past achievements but for its continued commitment to enriching the cultural landscape of Philadelphia for future generations. now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THE CITY COUNCIL OF PHILADELPHIA Hereby honors and celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Taller Puertorriqueño, Inc. and extends its sincere gratitude for the organization's ongoing dedication to the cultural and educational development of our city.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Taller Puertorriqueño as a sincere expression of the Philadelphia City Council’s recognition and appreciation.
