Honoring and recognizing Women Against Abuse on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary, and celebrating five decades of leadership on the frontlines of Philadelphia’s response to domestic violence.

WHEREAS, Women Against Abuse was founded in Philadelphia in 1976 by volunteers committed to ensuring that survivors of domestic violence were heard, believed, and supported; and
WHEREAS, From its earliest days, including its first Germantown rowhome shelter that quickly filled with families seeking safety, Women Against Abuse has remained rooted in Philadelphia as the City’s comprehensive domestic violence provider, operating critical lifelines for survivors of all gender identities through inclusive, culturally responsive, and accessible services; and
WHEREAS, The organization’s mission is to provide quality, compassionate, and nonjudgmental services that foster self-respect and independence in persons experiencing intimate partner violence, while leading the broader movement to end domestic violence through advocacy and community education; and
WHEREAS, For five decades, Women Against Abuse has transformed domestic violence from an overlooked and often dismissed issue into a coordinated, citywide public concern; and
WHEREAS, Women Against Abuse has elevated Philadelphia’s domestic violence response by operating two 100-bed emergency shelters, providing nationally recognized legal services and youth support, and pioneering Shared Safety to convene community organizations, public entities, and city
leadership into a unified response; and
WHEREAS, The organization’s work reflects the strength and compassion of Philadelphia, impacting countless survivors who have found safety, stability, and hope through its programs; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Philadelphia City Council hereby honors and recognizes Women Against Abuse for 50 years of service, celebrates its leadership in advancing safety and justice for survivors of domestic violence, and reaffirms its commitment to strengthening support systems and resources across Philadelphia; and
FURTHER RESOLVED, that an engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Women Against Abuse as an expression of the sincere admiration and gratitude of Philadelphia City Council.
