WHEREAS, Myra Brown has made history and lasting impact as the first Black woman to serve as Board Chair of Women’s Way, where she has been a transformative force in promoting gender equity, amplifying women’s voices, and advocating for inclusive leadership; and
WHEREAS, Over her seven years on the Women’s Way Board of Directors, including her historic tenure as Chair, Myra championed a bold vision of equity and inclusion. Under her guidance, the organization increased awareness of women's rights, civic engagement, and election issues, and implemented significant racial equity training, broadening its impact across communities and shaping a more just Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her civic leadership, Myra is the Chief Executive Officer and Owner of NWON Opportunities, LLC, a certified minority- and woman-owned business dedicated to work readiness, emotional support, coaching, industry training, and job placement. NWON strengthens both individuals and the workforce by bridging the gap between job seekers and businesses seeking skilled talent; and
WHEREAS, NWON Opportunities is also recognized as a nationally registered Department of Labor pre-apprenticeship program, where it delivers carpentry training to young adults, helping to build pathways into stable, skilled employment in the trades; and
WHEREAS, Myra is also the proud owner of Yelram Concepts and Construction, LLC, offering renovation and remodeling services for both residential and commercial clients, further demonstrating her entrepreneurial vision and leadership across industries; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of her distinguished career spanning more than three decades, Myra has served in a number of high-impact roles, including Regional Director of Business Services for PA CareerLink, Director of Human Resources and Diversity for the Philadelphia Orchestra Association, and Director of the Philadelphia branch of CareersUSA; and
WHEREAS, She has extended her leadership and service to numerous community-focused organizations, including past roles on the boards of Girls Rock Philly, the AIDS Law Project, and the NARAL Women of Color Committee; and
WHEREAS, Myra serves as a Chair of Montreux to Philly, leading a groundbreaking effort to bring the rich tradition and vibrant spirit of jazz music from Montreux, Switzerland, to the City of Philadelphia, fostering cultural exchange and celebrating the city’s deep jazz heritage; and
WHEREAS, Myra Brown has been a relentless champion for women’s leadership and gender equity, a cheerleader for collective empowerment, and a role model for aspiring leaders who seek to serve with both compassion and boldness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and recognizes Myra Brown for her historic accomplishments, entrepreneurial excellence, and unwavering commitment to justice, opportunity, and equity across our City and beyond.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Myra Brown as a lasting expression of profound gratitude, admiration, and best wishes of this legislative body for her exemplary leadership and continued success in future endeavors.
