Also naming 60th Street between Market Street and Arch Street as “E. Paul Sandidge Way”, in honor of E. Paul Sandidge, his 100th Birthday, and his more than 70 years of service to West Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, E. Paul Sandidge was born and raised in the City of Philadelphia. Throughout his 100 years in the city, he has been a distinguished member of the West Philadelphia community and has made an indelible imprint; and

 

WHEREAS, E. Paul was educated in the public school system and began his collegiate education at West Virginia State College in 1942. In May 1943, he was drafted and served his country in combat in the Pacific Theater of World War II from 1943 to 1946; and

 

WHEREAS, After being discharged from the Army in February 1946, he returned to West Virginia State College (WVS) in September 1946 and graduated in 1948. He has been a proud and active alumna for many years, returning for alumni weekends and maintaining treasured relationships with fellow alumni while supporting the WVS legacy. Education has always been important to E. Paul. He took courses at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, matriculated in graduate studies at New York University and taught as a real estate instructor at Berean Institute (1950 to 1956), Villanova University (1974 to 1981), and Immaculata College (1978); and

 

WHEREAS, He began his career in real estate in 1950, working with Earl Huff until 1953. In 1953, he partnered with Arthur Fauset, becoming Sandidge and Fauset until 1959 when he bought out Fauset to become Sandidge Real Estate. He has successfully operated in the West Philadelphia area in his office at 46 N. 60th Street for over 70 years, serving the African-American community with his expertise in sales, appraisals and property management; and 

 

WHEREAS, E. Paul has been an invaluable resource for the community, providing advice and maintaining the highest level of ethics. In the early 1960’s, Sandidge Real Estate was the contracted salesman for Yorktown in North Philadelphia. His six (6) full-time realtors sold over 300 properties in that neighborhood to first time African American homebuyers with children. Yorktown, a vibrant predominantly Black middle-class neighborhood, provided suburban style housing to those who didn’t have access in other areas due to segregation and discriminatory lending practices. The Yorktown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012; and

 

WHEREAS, E. Paul is a dedicated member of multiple professional and community associations. He served as President of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers-Philadelphia Chapter from 1977-1978 and was a member of the Appraisal Institute. He is a member of the National Association of Real Estate Appraisers. He has been a dedicated member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church since 1972, serving as a trustee for over 30 years and a treasurer for 14 years. He is now Trustee Emeritus, and highly regarded as a faithful church member. He has served on the Board of Eden Cemetery Company for nearly 20 years with roles that include Broker of Record, Assistant Treasurer, and Vice President; and

 

WHEREAS, On May 6, 2023, E. Paul Sandidge will celebrate his 100th Birthday. The Council of the City of Philadelphia celebrates this momentous occasion and joins Mr. Sandidge on this day, and thanks him for his dedicated work in the West Philadelphia community; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby also names 60th Street between Market Street and Arch Street as “E. Paul Sandidge Way”, in honor of E. Paul Sandidge, his 100th Birthday, and his more than 70 years of service to West Philadelphia.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to E. Paul Sandidge as a sign of the respect and admiration of this legislative body.
