Authorizing the Committee on Legislative Oversight to hold hearings to assess the current state of Philadelphia’s preparations for the multitude of events being held across the City throughout 2026 as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday and Philadelphia’s central role in America’s founding.

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, Philadelphia during the colonial era was America’s largest, most politically and economically powerful City, and the second largest City in the English-speaking world; and

 

WHEREAS, The First and Second Continental Congress, The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were all held, discussed debated and concluded in Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, As the preeminent City of America’s founding the nation and the world are turning to Philadelphia as America celebrates 250 years; and

 

WHEREAS, With the Major League Baseball All Star Game, the FIFA World Cup and the America’s 250th birthday and more all happening in Philadelphia in 2026, careful planning, coordination and communication will be required to deliver on our twin goals of throwing an inclusive, compelling and fun set of events while ensuring that the positive effects of 2026 create durable legacy spaces and programs for all Philadelphians; and

 

WHEREAS, The economic impact of 2026 events and experiences will generate the City and region an estimated $1.3 billion to $2.5 billion in additional revenue compared to a baseline; and

 

WHEREAS, The hearing will aim to bring together voices from across City government, sports, business and tourism communities as well as neighborhoods and other partners to ensure that we deliver a fun experience that creates lasting legacy impacts in places across Philadelphia, for all Philadelphians, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the Committee on Legislative Oversight be authorized to hold hearings to assess the current state of Philadelphia’s preparations for the multitude of events being held across the city throughout 2026 as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday and Philadelphia’s central role in America’s founding.
