Honoring March as National Reading Month and Recognizing the "Read by 4th" Initiative for Its Commitment to Early Childhood Literacy.

WHEREAS, March is recognized as National Reading Month, a time dedicated to promoting the importance of literacy and encouraging a lifelong love of reading; and

 

WHEREAS, National Reading Month also coincides with the birthday of the beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss, whose stories have inspired generations of young readers; and

 

WHEREAS, The "Read by 4th" initiative has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to improving literacy rates among young children in Philadelphia, ensuring they have the foundational reading skills necessary for academic success and lifelong learning; and

 

WHEREAS, The success of the "Read by 4th" initiative is strengthened by its network of parent partners, including the Reading Captains and the Parent Council, who play a vital role in supporting literacy efforts in Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, Reading Captains are passionate and dedicated community members who serve as trusted early literacy advocates within their neighborhoods, ensuring families have access to important reading resources and support; and

 

WHEREAS, The Read by 4th Parent Council brings together parents and caregivers to share their knowledge, experiences, and ideas to help advance the initiative’s mission and Common Agenda, working collaboratively to address barriers to reading success; and

 

WHEREAS, The Council recognizes the critical role that early childhood literacy plays in shaping future educational and professional opportunities and is committed to supporting efforts that strengthen literacy programs in the City; and

 

WHEREAS, We wish to acknowledge and celebrate the significant impact of the "Read by 4th" initiative, its dedicated network of Reading Captains, Parent Council members, educators, and community partners who work tirelessly to ensure all children in Philadelphia have the opportunity to develop strong reading skills; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors March as National Reading Month and commends the "Read by 4th" initiative team, including the Reading Captains and Parent Council, for their outstanding efforts in promoting early childhood literacy. The Council expresses its sincere appreciation for the initiative’s contributions to the betterment of our community and its ongoing commitment to protecting every child’s right to read.
