Recognizing the month of March 2026 as “Creative and Nighttime Economy Month” in the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia is a national and global hub of talent, entrepreneurship, culture, and innovation, with a dynamic creative and nighttime economy that contributes to the vibrancy, competitiveness, and identity of our City; and
WHEREAS, Creative and Nighttime Economy Month was first established in 2023 to affirm Philadelphia’s commitment to uplifting local creatives, cultural producers, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and organizations that fuel our arts, culture, hospitality, entertainment, and live event sectors; and
WHEREAS, The creative economy including artists, cultural nonprofits, designers, makers, and creative businesses produces cultural goods and services that enhance quality of life, strengthen neighborhood corridors, and drive economic growth across the City; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia’s broader nighttime economy encompassing hospitality, food and beverage, music, live performance, arts, entertainment, tourism, transportation, and essential services operating beyond traditional daytime hours represents a critical driver of economic activity and community engagement; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia’s Creative Economy including artists, cultural nonprofits, designers, makers, media, and creative businesses supports approximately 35,000 jobs and generates more than $3.3 billion in annual economic activity throughout the Greater Philadelphia region, contributing to entrepreneurship, innovation, and neighborhood vitality; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia’s broader Nighttime Economy encompassing hospitality, food and beverage, music, live performance, arts, entertainment, tourism, and related industries operating beyond traditional daytime hours generates an estimated $26.1 billion in total annual economic output, supports approximately 132,000 jobs, produces more than $9 billion in wages for local workers, and contributes approximately $358.8 million in annual tax revenue to the City of Philadelphia and $570.2 million to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, The Creative Economy serves as a foundational driver of the Nighttime Economy, fueling live performance, cultural tourism, hospitality activity, and neighborhood activation across Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, The creative economy remains a foundational component of this ecosystem, contributing independently to cultural production, innovation, and workforce development, while also serving as a key driver of activity within the nighttime economy; and
WHEREAS, on March 27, 2026, the Philadelphia Department of Commerce will present the 4th Annual Creative and Nighttime Economy Month Celebration, a Citywide initiative recognizing and uplifting creatives, entrepreneurs, cultural producers, and small businesses who contribute to Philadelphia’s vibrant economy while fostering collaboration among community stakeholders; and
WHEREAS, This celebration and month-long recognition will shine a spotlight on the importance of artists, creators, hospitality professionals, venue operators, and entrepreneurs who activate our corridors, strengthen neighborhood commerce, and enhance Philadelphia’s reputation as a premier destination for culture and nightlife; and
WHEREAS, Continued investment in and recognition of the creative and nighttime economies supports entrepreneurship, workforce opportunity, tourism growth, cultural preservation, and economic resilience across all neighborhoods of Philadelphia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognize the month of March 2026 as “Creative and Nighttime Economy Month” in the City of Philadelphia and encourages residents, businesses, and stakeholders to celebrate and support the individuals and organizations that make these sectors essential to the City’s economic strength and cultural vibrancy.
