Title

Recognizing September 2005 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and honoring Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for their outstanding efforts in the fight against childhood cancer.

Body

Whereas, Fifty years ago, children and adolescents survived only a short time after the diagnosis of cancer. Today, 75 percent of children and adolescents with cancer are cured. This tremendous improvement is the result of research and treatment innovations led by specialized hospitals such as The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP); and

Whereas, A cornerstone of this success has been the large national and international clinical research trials in which many patients at Children's Hospital participate; and

Whereas, CHOP has become universally known as a leader in treatment. In its comprehensive 2005 survey of children’s hospitals across the United States, Child Magazine rated Children’s Hospital’s Oncology Division No. 1 in the nation; and

Whereas, CHOP treats more children with cancer than any other general pediatric hospital in the United States and more than two thirds of children with cancer in the Delaware Valley are treated at Children's Hospital; and

Whereas, CHOP also cares for patients with certain benign, non-cancerous tumors that respond to treatment with cancer medicines and is a world leader in treating neuroblastoma, the most common solid tumor outside of the brain.  CHOP is at the forefront of researching and developing new therapies to treat pediatric leukemia, brain tumors and other cancers; and

Whereas, CHOP provides long-term follow-up care for more than 2,000 children and young adult survivors of childhood cancer and established the Cancer Survivorship Program, the first long-term follow-up program in the nation for childhood cancer survivors; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize September 2005 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and honor the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for their outstanding efforts in the fight against childhood cancer.

RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the doctors, nurses and support staff of CHOP as evidence of the respect and admiration of this legislative body.
