Honoring Mo’ne Davis, Philadelphia native and 10th overall pick in the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League draft.

WHEREAS, Mo'ne Davis, born and raised in South Philadelphia, began her journey to athletic greatness at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center, where she honed her skills in basketball and baseball, setting the foundation for a career that would break barriers in sports; and

 

WHEREAS, Under the guidance of program director and coach Steve Bandura at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center, Davis excelled at basketball, becoming the only girl on the team, in addition to baseball and soccer; and

 

WHEREAS, Mo'ne Davis first captured national attention in 2014 when she became the first female pitcher to earn a win in the Little League World Series, leading her team to the U.S. Championship Game and cementing her place in sports history at only 13 years old; and

 

WHEREAS, Davis' exceptional performance at the Little League World Series made her a household name and earned her a feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated as the first female Little League player to appear on the cover in the magazine's history; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2015, Davis released a memoir titled, Mo'ne Davis: Remember My Name, written with Hilary Beard, reflecting on her experiences as a young female athlete breaking barriers in a male-dominated sport, and offering inspiration to others to persevere in the pursuit of their dreams. In that same year, Davis teamed up with the brand M4D3 (Make A Difference Everyday) to design a line of sneakers for girls, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Plan International's Because I Am a Girl initiative, which seeks to lift girls out of poverty in the developing world; and

 

WHEREAS, in November 2025, Mo'ne Davis made history once again when she was drafted by the Los Angeles team in the inaugural Women's Professional Baseball League draft, becoming the 10th overall pick and marking a historic moment for women in professional baseball; and

 

WHEREAS, Davis continues to be an advocate for gender equality, serving as a role model for young women and empowering them through her achievements both on and off the field; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors Mo'ne Davis for her groundbreaking achievements in sports, her dedication to equality and empowerment, and her selection as the 10th overall pick in the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League draft, marking a historic milestone for women in baseball.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Mo’ne Davis as a testament to the City’s appreciation of her leadership as a trailblazer in both athletics and advocacy for young girls around the world.
