Recognizing the month of April as “National Woodworking Month” in the City of Philadelphia

WHEREAS, Established in 1987 by the Woodworkers Guild of America, National Woodworking Month has been observed throughout the month of April to celebrate the rich tradition and enduring craft of woodworking; and
WHEREAS, Woodworking encompasses cabinetry and furniture manufacturing, wood carving, carpentry, and woodturning, among others; and
WHEREAS, Woodworking has deep roots, tracing back to ancient civilizations like Egypt, where artisans crafted furniture and boats, and has evolved through centuries, influencing cultures worldwide; and
WHEREAS, From ancient times to the modern era, every civilization on the planet has used wood to create functional, elegant, and decorative products. There is woodwork from the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Chinese, and many other ancient societies around the world used woodworking in a variety of styles and techniques; and
WHEREAS, The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America recognize National Woodworking Month because union hands shape the spaces where people live, work, and gather, from formwork to finish carpentry. Woodwork is a critical skill to know to be a successful carpenter, and is one of the many disciplines within carpentry that allows for flexibility in the creation of objects, which can be lucrative for those well trained and skilled at the practice; and
WHEREAS, National Woodworking Month is particularly significant to woodworking companies, as it presents a time to reflect on the timeless appeal of handcrafted wood products and the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each piece. Woodworkers take pride in their role within this tradition, continually striving to innovate while honoring the techniques and values established centuries ago; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes the month of April as “National Woodworking Month” in the City of Philadelphia
