WHEREAS, The United States Women’s Hockey Team represents the highest standard of athletic achievement in the sport of women’s ice hockey and has demonstrated excellence, dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship on the international stage; and
WHEREAS, At the Winter Olympic Games, Team USA women’s hockey competed against the world’s most elite hockey programs, completing an undefeated run through the Olympic tournament before the winning gold medal game. Previously, they hadn’t lost a game in a major international competition since the 2024 Women’s World Championship gold-medal game; and
WHEREAS, In a thrilling gold medal final, Team USA displayed unwavering resolve and teamwork to secure the Olympic Gold Medal. Led by team captain Hilary Knight, USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to win gold, bringing pride and honor to the United States and inspiring millions of Americans; and
WHEREAS, The team’s achievement reflects years of disciplined training, sacrifice, and commitment by the players, coaches, and support staff, as well as the continued growth and advancement of women’s athletics across the nation; and
WHEREAS, Despite their extraordinary accomplishments, revenue, and visibility generated by women’s sports, athletes that identify as women have historically faced inequities in pay, sponsorship opportunities, media coverage, and institutional investment compared to their male-identifying counterparts; and
WHEREAS, The fight for pay equity and equal recognition in athletics is essential to ensuring fairness, expanding opportunity, and affirming the value of women’s sports at every level of competition; and
WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia recognizes the importance of celebrating national achievements that uplift communities, promote equality in sports, and inspire future generations to pursue excellence; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA hereby honors and recognizes the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team for winning the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics and representing the United States with distinction, integrity, and excellence.
