Proclaiming October 2007 as “Crime Prevention Month.”

Body

WHEREAS, In 1984, the National Crime Prevention Council designated October as Crime Prevention Month; and

 

WHEREAS, Every year since then, government agencies, civic groups, schools, businesses, and youth organizations have reached out to educate the public, showcase their accomplishments, and explore new partnerships during this special month; and

 

WHEREAS, In essence, October has become the official month for recognizing and celebrating the practice of crime prevention, while promoting awareness of important issues such as victimization, volunteerism, and creating safer, more caring communities; and

 

WHEREAS, The month-long celebration spotlights successful crime prevention efforts on the local, state, and national levels; and

 

WHEREAS, Some of these activities focus on Halloween, which is celebrated in the last week of the month; and

 

WHEREAS, The efforts throughout the month generate enthusiasm for prevention so it can grow stronger and become more widespread; and

 

WHEREAS, National Crime Prevention Council believes that crime can and should be prevented; and

 

WHEREAS, Truly effective prevention requires addressing causes of crime and reducing opportunities for it to occur; everyone, no matter what age, position, or capacity, can and must take individual action to stop crime; and

 

WHEREAS, The problems of crime, violence, and drug abuse are best addressed through local action supported by local and state policies; partnerships that actively involve the local community and its residents, this is key to preventing crime; now therefore

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That October 2007 is recognized as Crime Prevention Month.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson as evidence of the sincere appreciation and support of this legislative body.
