Honoring and celebrating Summer Search Philadelphia for their dedication to empowering Philadelphia’s youth through mentorship, education, and career exploration.

WHEREAS, Summer Search Philadelphia is a nonprofit organization committed to empowering high school students from underserved communities in the Philadelphia area, having supported over 479 young people since its inception in 2008, helping them navigate systemic barriers and achieve academic and personal success; and

 

WHEREAS, Summer Search Philadelphia offers a comprehensive, multi-year program that includes mentorship, transformative summer opportunities, post-secondary advising, and career exploration, all aimed at unlocking students’ potential and helping them fulfill their dreams; and

 

WHEREAS, Through its mission, Summer Search Philadelphia strives to provide equitable opportunities to young people, particularly those from marginalized communities, by breaking down barriers and fighting for equity, fostering the development of resilience, leadership, and inner strength; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Christina Cho, the Executive Director of Summer Search Philadelphia since December 2024, brings nearly 13 years of experience in education and a deep personal connection to the organization’s mission as a first-generation college graduate, daughter of immigrants, and passionate advocate for BIPOC youth; and

 

WHEREAS, Under Dr. Cho’s leadership, Summer Search Philadelphia has continued to make a profound impact in the community, providing mentorship and transformative experiences that help students grow into confident, capable leaders; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Cho credits the success of Summer Search Philadelphia to the dedication of the talented staff-Imani, Orneno, Jillian, Muffy, Shawn, and Theo-whose hard work and commitment make the organization’s work possible, and with whom she shares this recognition; and

 

WHEREAS, Summer Search Philadelphia’s work extends beyond educational support, creating opportunities for career exploration, internships, and leadership development, which help students transition to post-secondary education and future careers, empowering them to build better futures for themselves and their communities; and

 

WHEREAS, Summer Search Philadelphia has served 283 young people in 2024, including 116 high schoolers and 167 young adults through their post-secondary program, with nearly 500 alumni now benefiting from the organization's support. Their impact on education is evidenced by the 94% graduation rate of high school seniors, with 94% of them earning college acceptance. Once in college, 62% of Summer Search students graduate within six years, compared to 21% of their low-income, first-generation peers; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2024, Summer Search Philadelphia began implementing a significant four-year investment from the U.S. Department of Education to increase the number of students served by 50% and improve academic performance, ensuring a 97% high school graduation rate and a 90% post-secondary completion rate. This grant will enhance college and career readiness programs, financial literacy offerings, and mentoring programs, while ensuring that youth develop critical social-emotional skills in a trauma-sensitive environment; and

 

WHEREAS, Summer Search’s summer experiences, which are fully funded, provide a crucial opportunity for BIPOC students, combating summer learning loss and providing access to enriching opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them. In 2024, 36 sophomores and 25 juniors participated in transformative summer programs, with 94% reporting that the experience supported their identity and social-emotional development; and

 

WHEREAS, As Summer Search Philadelphia celebrates its continued success in serving Philadelphia’s youth, it is fitting that the City of Philadelphia honors this remarkable organization for its extraordinary contributions to the City and its unwavering commitment to empowering youth through mentorship, education, and career exploration; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and celebrates Summer Search Philadelphia for its unwavering dedication to uplifting Philadelphia’s youth, recognizing its outstanding contributions to education, mentorship, career exploration, and community transformation.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Dr. Christina Cho and the talented staff of Summer Search Philadelphia, as an expression of the admiration and respect of this legislative body for their outstanding work and dedication to empowering Philadelphia’s youth.
