Honoring and Commending Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated for their dedication to providing services and programs that promote human welfare.

Body

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization of over 195,000 predominately African American College educated women with more than 850 chapters located in the U.S., Japan, Germany, England, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and

 

WHEREAS, Their major programs such as Sorority Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement are based upon the organizations’ Five Point Programmatic Thrust; and

 

WHEREAS, The Sorors provide a cadre of public services through the Five Point Programmatic Thrust including voter registration and education, Adopt-A-School, Delta Habitat for Humanity, Delta Days in the State and National capitals, Delta Academy and Clinical Depression; and

 

WHEREAS, A Statewide Founders Weekend was held on Friday, January 19th through Sunday, January 21st, 2001 which was co-hosted by Philadelphia Alumnae, Valley Forge Alumnae, Quaker City Alumnae, and Chester Alumnae Chapters.  The event, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, celebrated the birth of the Sorority by its illustrious founders in 1913.  More than 200 Sorors were in attendance; and

 

WHEREAS, Local chapters include such notables as the great jurist and philanthropist, the late Juanita Kidd Stout; prominent Educator and School Board member, Dorothy Rush;  Media personalities Monique Braxton and Joyce Evans;  Former Commerce Director and City Representative Gerri Walker;  SEPTA Assistant General Manager Frances M. Jones; Deputy City Commissioner Linda Watson; Former Superintendent of Schools Constance Clayton; Philadelphia Chapter President Rita Waters;   Councilwomen Blondell Reynolds Brown and Marian B. Tasco;  and many other skilled and talented leaders in the Philadelphia area that are just too numerous to mention; now therefore

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors and commends Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated for their excellent work and dedication to services and programs which promote human welfare.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as evidence of the sincere admiration and gratitude of this legislative body for the many years of dedicated service that they have provided the communities of Philadelphia and beyond.
