WHEREAS, In 1910, International Women's Day was established at the First International Women's Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark through a resolution by German social advocate Clara Zetkin; and
 
WHEREAS, The first International Women's Day was celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, and has now spread to 67 countries spanning 6 continents; and
 
WHEREAS, Women have made substantial accomplishments in social, political and economic life since the first International Women's Day through their impassioned advocacy, hard work and commitment to the ideals of equality, respect and tolerance; and
 
WHEREAS, The 103rd International Women's Day will be celebrated on March 8th of this year with particular attention to the theme “Inspiring Change”. It calls for challenging the status quo for women's equality and vigilance inspiring positive change; and
 
WHEREAS, International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1987, the United States Congress incorporated the history of International Women's Day into its proclamation establishing March as Women's History Month; and
 
WHEREAS, Americans across the country will celebrate the centennial anniversary with dozens of events, honoring the incalculable achievements of women; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia has established itself as a center for intellectual, social and cultural life through the countless efforts of women like Marion Anderson, Margaret Mead, Betsy Ross, Sonia Sanchez, C. Delores Tucker and Madame C.J. Walker; now, therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize and congratulate women and girls throughout the world on the 103rd celebration of International Women's Day.
