Recognizing the Saturday during Penn Relay weekend as Coach Fred Rosenfeld Day in appreciation of his outstanding leadership and commitment to today's youth in fostering sportsmanship, excellence and discipline through the sport of Track and Field.
Body
WHEREAS, The Penn Relays is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States. The Relays have been hosted annually during the last weekend in April since 1895 by the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Coach Fred Rosenfeld has been an active participant in these premiere relays as a lead official and longtime coach producing champions and stellar athletes; and
 
WHEREAS, As a coach in the Philadelphia Public League for over 30 years, Coach Rosenfeld was able to foster the careers of many track and field champions. During his tenure as the coach for Overbrook and Central High Schools, his mens' teams won 14 outdoor Public League titles over a period of 25 years; and
 
WHEREAS, Similar to his commitment and success with the mens' teams, Coach Rosenfeld lead the Central High School women's cross country team to its first Cross Country Public League Championship which was followed by 4 additional titles; and
 
WHEREAS, Throughout his time of being a coach, Coach Rosenfeld created a competitive spirit that rallied the troops on the battle field whose primary objectives of victory WERE predicated on camaraderie among teammates and coaches. Many of his athletes have graduated and had stellar college careers, through scholarship awards as well as gone on to Olympic Teams; and
 
WHEREAS, The high standards set by Coach Fred Rosenfeld has laid the foundation for his athletes to succeed at all they have desired to achieve; now therefore
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor Coach Fred Rosenfeld for his outstanding leadership and commitment to fostering today's young athletes through Track and Field by designating the Saturday during Penn Relay weekend as the City of Philadelphia's day to recognize his extraordinary work.
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Fred Rosenfeld as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this body.
