Title

Recognizing the exemplary mission and work of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of United Nations Association and its cooperating organizations, as we celebrate United Nations Week 2002 during the week of October 18-27.

Body

WHEREAS, United Nations Week will be celebrated around the world beginning the week of October 18,2002; and

 

WHEREAS, The United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia (UNA-GP) of the United States of America is a voluntary organization established in 1998 in Philadelphia to promote public awareness about the work of the United Nations; and

 

WHEREAS, The UNA-GP is part of an international network of concerned world citizens whose primary mission is to work with other nations to achieve the goals set forth in the preamble of the Charter of the United Nations and to enhance the commitment and leadership of the United States in furthering internationalism, multilateral agreements, respect for international law and a stronger United Nations system; and

 

WHEREAS, The UNA-GP’s stated mission is grounded on a vision and hope that seeks to enable the United States and other powerful nations to shift hundreds of billions of dollars spent annually on the proliferation of weapons of war to programs serving human needs; and

 

WHEREAS, The United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia is coordinating educational activities to inform the public about the work of the United Nations with other organizations which include; American Friends Service Committee, Amnesty International, Bucks County UNA, Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities, Catholic Peace Fellowship, Global Education Motivators, International House, Multicultural Youth exchange, New Voice Project, Philadelphia Ethical Society, Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Unitarian Society of Germantown, US fund for UNICEF, Veterans for Peace, World Federalists Association, Work Information Transfer, and WYBE; and

 

WHEREAS, Philadelphia is becoming an international metropolis, characterized as the city of “brotherly and sisterly love,” a global theme for world communities to emulate; now therefore

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Salutes the work of the United Nations and the citizens of the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia and its cooperating organizations and conveys the hope for improved understanding about the work of the United Nations as we encourage the residents of this city to join in celebrating United Nations Week 2002 during the week of October 18-27.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the capable leadership and members of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the United Nations Association, as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
