Recognizing and honoring The 10TH Anniversary of the Gary Papa Father's Day Prostate Run.

WHEREAS, Each year, nearly 200,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and an estimated 27,000 will die from the disease; and
 
WHEREAS, Prostate cancer tends to develop in men over 50 and becomes more common with advancing age.  Although it is one of the most prevalent types of cancer in men, many never have symptoms, undergo no therapy and eventually die of other causes. Many men never know they have prostate cancer; and  
 
WHEREAS, In 2005, Gary Papa became the spokesperson for the run and tirelessly worked to establish and promote the Father's Day “ Run 4 Your Life”, all the while waging his own courageous battle with prostate cancer; and
 
WHEREAS, Although Gary lost his battle in 2009, the board of the foundation for Breast and Prostate Health continues to cherish and honor his memory by renaming the race after him so that his dedication to the cause may never be forgotten; and  
 
WHEREAS,  Prostate Health International (PHI) hosts the annual Gary Papa Father's Day Prostate Run to increase awareness and raise funds for the research, prevention, and education of prostate cancer and free prostate screenings for men in the Delaware Valley; and
 
WHEREAS, In addition to PHI, the 10th Annual Gary Papa Father's Day run will be presented by 6ABC WPVI-TV and The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98; and  
 
WHEREAS, The Co-Chairpersons of this year's event are Jamie Apody, Action News Sports Anchor and John J. Dougherty, Business Manager of Local 98; and

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and recognize the 10th Anniversary of the Gary Papa Father's Day Prostate Run.  
 
RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Shelley Schwartz, Founder of the Foundation for Prostate Health, as further evidence of the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
