Recognizing the week of October 5th-11th as “National Fire Prevention Week” in the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, National Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871, which resulted in significant loss of life and property, highlighting the importance of fire safety; and

 

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) responds to tens of thousands of fire and emergency incidents annually, demonstrating the ongoing need for community awareness and preparedness; and

 

WHEREAS, Residential fires remain a leading cause of injury and death among children in the United States, particularly affecting those aged 4 and younger; and

 

WHEREAS, The majority of fire related fatalities occur in structures lacking functioning smoke alarms, underscoring the critical importance of proper fire safety equipment; and

 

WHEREAS, PFD continues to implement programs that reduce fire fatalities and promote public education on fire prevention and emergency preparedness; and

 

WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week provides an opportunity to educate residents, children, parents, teachers, and firefighters about essential fire safety practices; and

 

WHEREAS, Philadelphia’s previous fire prevention resolutions have emphasized the value of public awareness campaigns, school education programs, and community engagement in fire safety initiatives; and

 

WHEREAS, Ongoing advances in fire safety technology, including smoke detectors and fire safety apps, support the City’s efforts to protect lives and property; and

 

WHEREAS, Collaborative efforts between City agencies, community organizations, and residents are essential to preventing fires and minimizing risks; and

 

WHEREAS, Promoting fire prevention awareness encourages responsible behavior, preparedness, and the adoption of safety measures that can save lives; and

 

WHEREAS, The City recognizes the dedication of firefighters and emergency responders who serve on the front lines of fire safety and emergency medical services; and

 

WHEREAS, Engaging the public in fire safety education fosters a safer and more resilient community; and

 

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia remains committed to reducing fire incidents, enhancing emergency response, and protecting residents from fire related hazards; and

 

WHEREAS, National Fire Prevention Week serves as a reminder to review home safety plans, check smoke alarms, and educate all residents about fire hazards; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes the week of October 5th-11th as “National Fire Prevention Week” in the City of Philadelphia.
