Title

Renaming the 700 Block of North 63rd Street “Madeline Dunn Way” in recognition of her lifetime of community leadership and civic engagement in West Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Madeline Dunn, born Madeline Glenn on October 14th, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Amos and Leslie Glenn, has devoted her life to her family and to the civic life of West Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1954, she married Rodney Lee Dunn, and together they raised two children, Rodney and Rebecca. Madeline is also the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren; and

 

WHEREAS, For decades, Mrs. Dunn has been a respected community leader in West Philadelphia who has encouraged civic participation and neighborhood involvement; and

 

WHEREAS, She has supported candidates and causes she believed would serve her community, including the reelection of District Attorney Larry Krasner in 2021; and

 

WHEREAS, She worked on the campaigns of the late Lucien Blackwell and later supported Jannie Blackwell, assisting with organizing and voter outreach; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Dunn was an avid supporter of Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr.’s 2007 campaign and was a member of his original staff in 2008; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Dunn also worked alongside leaders including James R. Barber, Charles Bowser, Cecil B. Moore, Herman Rice, and Chaka Fattah during pivotal periods in the City’s civic history; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1979, she mounted a campaign for the 4th Councilmanic District, challenging then City Council President George Schwartz; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Dunn has consistently urged residents to register to vote, participate in elections, and remain informed about public affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, She supported the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and later Joe Biden and Kamala Harris; and

 

WHEREAS, At 93 years of age, Madeline Dunn continues to represent a lifetime commitment to her neighborhood and to the democratic process; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the 700 Block of North 63rd Street shall be renamed “Madeline Dunn Way,” in recognition of her longstanding service to West Philadelphia.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Madeline Dunn as a mark of the respect and appreciation of the Council of the City of Philadelphia.
