Declaring “Red October” in the City of Philadelphia and wishing the 2025 Philadelphia Phillies luck in their postseason playoff race.

WHEREAS, Philadelphia is one of America’s greatest baseball Cities, with a rich bat-and-ball tradition dating back to 1883 when the Philadelphia Phillies were first formed; and
WHEREAS, After a decade-long playoff drought, the Phillies have now clinched a spot in the MLB Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, cementing themselves as one of baseball’s most formidable championship contenders of the 2020s; and
WHEREAS, The 96-66 Phillies, winners of the National League East Championship for the second year in the row, finished the 2025 season with the second-best record in baseball. Having earned a first-round playoff bye, they are among the favorites to win the 2025 World Series; and
WHEREAS, The Phillies rank among the highest in the league in fan attendance, and the atmosphere of Phillies playoff games has historically been so emphatic that it has spawned a nickname: “Red October”; and
WHEREAS, This Red October will see the Phillies’ high-powered offense bolstered by the National League MVP level play of its Designated Hitter, Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber swatted an NL leading 56 home runs in the 2025 season, including a remarkable four home run performance against the Atlanta Braves on August 28th. He was also named the 2025 MLB All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player; and
WHEREAS, Shortstop Trea Turner was named 2025’s National League Batting champion for the second time in his career, posting a .304 batting average. He is the first Phillie since Richie Ashburn in 1958 to win the league’s batting title; and
WHEREAS, Two-time National League MVP Bryce Harper continues to perform at a high level, leading a Phillies lineup that has gotten red hot as the playoffs approach. Moreover, the Phillies pitching rotation, despite missing its ace Zach Wheeler, have continued to hold steady with Christopher Sanchez and Ranger Suarez on the mound, and Jhoan Duran as the closer; and
WHEREAS, The excitement over this Phillies team is palpable, as disappointing playoff exits in recent years, including a 2022 World Series loss, have served as motivation for the current squad to finally win a championship. The City of Philadelphia is proud to cheer on its Phillies as they begin their playoff campaign; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby declares “Red October” in the City of Philadelphia, and wishes the 2025 Philadelphia Phillies luck in their postseason playoff race.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to the Philadelphia Phillies as a sign of the admiration and respect of this legislative body.
