Title

Honoring and Recognizing America I AM, the African American Imprint, as a historic exhibit on display at the National Constitution Center.

Body

WHEREAS, The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia will host the world debut of America I AM: The African American Imprint on display from January 15th until May 3rd, 2009; and

 

WHEREAS, A new exhibition that will be celebrating nearly 500 years of African American contributions that will canvass more than 13,000 square feet within the center; and

 

WHEREAS, The exhibition will present a historical continuum of pivotal moments in courage, conviction, and creativity that solidifies the undeniable imprint of African Americans across the nation and around the world; and

 

WHEREAS, The display will contain more than 200 artifacts and information to provide context and background to the exhibit as to how African American have contributed and shaped American culture; and

 

WHEREAS, The exhibit will highlight many aspects of African American history leading up to present day events, including the inauguration of the first African American president; and

 

WHEREAS, A part of the National Constitution Center’s collection for most of 2009, the series conveys a journey from struggle to triumph to celebration; and

 

WHEREAS, Featuring such poignant pieces as: “The Doors of No Return, (a door were enslaved African passed through to board ships to the New World)” Malcolm X’s dairy and personal Koran, and many other important items from the beginnings of our nation through contemporary popular culture; and

 

WHEREAS, By visiting the exhibit citizens will now be inspired and engaged in an important cultural and historical dialogue at the National Constitution Center; now therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and recognize America I AM, the African American Imprint exhibit, as a cultural experience shared through United States culture and history to tell the unique story of African Americans contributions to this nation on display at the National Constitution Center.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to representatives from America I AM, the African American Imprint series, Tavis Smiley Group, and the National Constitution Center for honoring the work, efforts, and legacy of African Americans as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
