Also naming the 2900 block of Ogden Street as “Councilman Bill Greenlee Way,” in honor of former Philadelphia City Councilmember William K. “Bill” Greenlee and in recognition of his decades of dedicated service to the people and neighborhoods of Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, William K. “Bill” Greenlee is a lifelong resident of the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia and a graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School and Temple University; and

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Greenlee developed an enduring commitment to public service through his deep roots in the Fairmount community and his longstanding involvement in the civic affairs of Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1980, Councilman Greenlee began his career in City government as chief aide to the late Councilmember David Cohen, serving for 26 years and earning a reputation for attentive constituent service and a practical understanding of the concerns facing Philadelphia residents; and

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Greenlee was elected to Philadelphia City Council in a special election in November 2006 and was subsequently reelected to serve full terms in 2007, 2011, and 2015 as a Councilmember At-Large; and

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Greenlee championed Philadelphia’s earned sick leave law, a landmark measure protecting eligible workers and their families by allowing employees to earn sick time through their employment; and

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Greenlee sponsored legislation requiring reasonable workplace accommodations for employees with needs related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, helping to ensure greater dignity and fairness in the workplace; and

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Greenlee also advanced civil-rights protections under the City’s Fair Practices Ordinance and supported measures protecting domestic-violence survivors from housing and employment discrimination and safeguarding property owners from fraudulent deed transfers; and

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Greenlee served as Democratic Leader of the 15th Ward, remained deeply engaged in the Fairmount Civic Association, and built a legacy grounded in the principle that public service begins with listening carefully and responding meaningfully to the needs of one’s neighbors; and

 

WHEREAS, Upon concluding his tenure on Philadelphia City Council at the end of 2019, Councilman Greenlee completed approximately four decades of service in City government, leaving a lasting record of advocacy for working families and steadfast dedication to the people of Philadelphia; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the 2900 block of Ogden Street shall henceforth also be known as “Councilman Bill Greenlee Way.”

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Councilman William K. “Bill” Greenlee as evidence of the sincere respect and appreciation of this legislative body.
