WHEREAS, The Domestic Violence Unit serves as a crucial lifeline for victims of domestic violence in the City of Philadelphia, providing essential support and legal assistance to those in need; and

 

WHEREAS, The dedicated professionals within the Domestic Violence Unit work tirelessly to conduct interviews, prepare Protection from Abuse (PFA) Petitions, and facilitate the entry of Temporary PFA Orders, ensuring that victims receive timely and effective legal protections; and

 

WHEREAS, The collaboration between the Domestic Violence Unit and the Senior Law Center exemplifies a commitment to serving our elderly community members, offering vital resources and referrals for those facing abuse; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2023, the Domestic Violence Unit received an unprecedented 9,039 PFA petitions and Domestic Relations Judges presided over more than 17,400 domestic violence-related events, reflecting the pressing need for these vital services; and

 

WHEREAS, The Domestic Relations Division Judges diligently conduct hearings to vacate or extend restraining orders, as well as address contempt of PFA orders, ensuring accountability and justice for victims; and

 

WHEREAS, The Domestic Violence Unit's efforts extend to criminal trials for indirect criminal contempt, with over 3,700 hearings conducted in 2022, demonstrating their commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of victims; and

 

WHEREAS, The dedication of the Domestic Violence Unit has made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals and families, fostering a safer and more supportive community; and

 

WHEREAS, As we fight against the ills of domestic violence in Philadelphia and across the nation, we value and respect the work of the Domestic Violence Unit in our City. Their work is imperative to keeping our citizens safe and ensuring that domestic violence is not tolerated in the City of Philadelphia; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and recognizes the Domestic Violence Unit in the City of Philadelphia, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, for their exemplary service and commitment to the fight against domestic violence.
