Honoring, recognizing, and celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Community College of Philadelphia

 

Body

WHEREAS, The Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) was founded in 1964 under the leadership of Mayor James H. Tate with the mission of providing affordable and accessible education to Philadelphians and surrounding communities; and

 

WHEREAS, The College opened its doors to 1,200 students in 1965 at the former Snellenberg Department Store on South 11th Street, and has since grown to serve more than 34,000 students annually through credit and non-credit programs; and

 

WHEREAS, Over sixty years, CCP has become Philadelphia’s largest institution of higher education, the sixth largest in Pennsylvania, offering more than 70 associate degree and certificate programs; and

 

WHEREAS, The College’s expansion includes regional centers in West, Northwest, and Northeast Philadelphia, allowing CCP to reach residents across every section of the City; and

 

WHEREAS, The main campus on Spring Garden Street stands as a cornerstone of opportunity and advancement, transforming lives through education, workforce training, and community engagement; and

 

WHEREAS, A building once used as Philadelphia’s third U.S. Mint has been repurposed as an exhibit space celebrating the work of Gilroy Roberts, the ninth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and creator of the portrait of Robert F. Kennedy featured on the half dollar; and

 

WHEREAS, In celebration of its 60th Anniversary, CCP will host a series of events throughout the year, including a fundraising gala to support student scholarships and the unveiling of a new interactive display honoring distinguished alumni; and

 

WHEREAS, CCP will also reflect on its history through storytelling, community programming, and digital tributes that highlight its legacy and contributions to the city’s educational and workforce landscape; and

 

WHEREAS, Since its founding, the Community College of Philadelphia has remained steadfast in its mission to educate and uplift Philadelphians by fostering equity, opportunity, and lifelong learning; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honor, recognize and celebrate Community College of Philadelphia on its 60th Anniversary.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Interim President of Community College of Philadelphia and other members of the staff, faculty, and board of this great institution.
