Title

Congratulating the St. Joseph's Prep Football Team for winning the 2001 Catholic League Red Division Championship on December 1, 2001.

Body

WHEREAS, On a balmy early December evening in front of a crowd of 5,000 fans at Northeast High's Charlie Martin Stadium, St. Joe's Prep defeated Monsignor Bonner 31-6, to win their 12th Catholic League Championship in their storied football history; and

 

WHEREAS, By winning the 2001 Red Division Catholic League Championship, the Hawklets avenged a defeat in last year's title game which was the Prep's only loss of the 2000 season; and

 

WHEREAS, St. Joe's began the season with three tough road losses to Central Bucks West, Malvern, and Holy Cross, New Jersey.  All three games were hard fought, competitive contests that went well into the 4th quarter before the outcomes were decided; and

 

WHEREAS, The Prep finished the season with 10 consecutive wins as the determined Hawklets stormed through the regular season and the post season; and

 

WHEREAS, Following a scoreless 1st quarter, the Prep scored 21 points before halftime as quarterback Vince Gallagher connected with Jim Lachman and Pete Chromiak on 23 and 72 yard touchdown passes and Kyle Amrogi, who rushed for 95 yards, completed the first half scoring with a 5 yard touchdown run; and

 

WHEREAS, The Prep continued to move the ball effectively in the second half and never gave Monsignor Bonner a chance to get back into the game; and

 

WHEREAS, Near the end of the game, the Rev. David Sauter, who is in his last year as school president, was the recipient of a bucket of water, compliments of guard, John Connors.  Energetic Prep fans later stormed the field which set in motion a wild celebration; now therefore

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we congratulate the St. Joseph's Prep Football Team for winning the 2001 Catholic League Red Division Championship on December 1, 2001.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the St. Joseph's Prep Football Team and to Coach Gil Brooks, further evidencing the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
