Body
WHEREAS, In his eight seasons as the Philadelphia Phillies Manager, Charlie Manuel recorded the most wins ever by a Phillies Manager at 780 passing Gene Mauch on the all-time list and he recorded his career one thousandth victory in August 2013; and

WHEREAS, Since 2005, those 780 wins recorded by Charlie Manuel and the Phillies are the most wins in the National League and fourth overall in the Major Leagues; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Manuel led the Phillies to five consecutive play-off years and is only one of two managers in National League history to win five straight division titles since divisional play began in 1969; and

WHEREAS, In his first season managing the Phillies in 2005, the Phillies went 88 and 74, only one game back of the Wildcard.  In 2007 the Phillies captured their first National League East title since 1993; and

WHEREAS, Although the 2008 season started out slowly, the team went on to win 92 games  earning first place again in the National League East for the second consecutive year.  The Phillies went on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers in the Divisional Series three games to one and beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series four to one to advance to the World Series; and

WHEREAS, After game five was suspended due to rain, the Phillies won that game four to three against the Tampa Bay Rays on October 27, 2008 bringing Philadelphia its first World Series win since 1980 and its second title in World Series history; and

WHEREAS, In 2009, Charlie Manuel guided the Phillies back to the World Series, becoming the first manager in franchise history to do so and marking the first time a National League team won back to back pennants since the 1995 and 1996 Atlanta Braves; and

WHEREAS, In 2010 the Phillies had the best record in the Major Leagues for the first time in franchise history recording 97 regular season wins under Manuel.  In September 2011 Charlie Manuel again led the Phillies to their fifth consecutive National League East title, and their quickest post-season clinch ever at game 150.  Manuel became only the second manager in Phillies history to win 100 games in a season, as the team went on to set another franchise record at 102 regular season wins; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Manuel has also been recognized for his accomplishments off the baseball field and in the community including being honored in 2011 as Magee Rehabilitation Hospital's “Humanitarian of the Year” for his frequent visits to hospitals to meet with spinal cord and stroke victims; now therefore, be it,

RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF PHILADELPHIA, Recognize and honor Charlie Manuel for his accomplishments in his nine years managing the Philadelphia Phillies, making him the Manager with the most wins and guiding the team to five consecutive post-season appearances including the 2008 World Series championship.  We wish him the best in his future endeavors.
