Honoring and recognizing Cecily Tynan on the occasion of her retirement, in celebration of more than three decades of dedicated service to 6abc/WPVI-TV Action News and to the people of the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, Cecily Joan Tynan joined WPVI-TV (6abc) Action News in 1995 as the station's weekend weather anchor and a general assignment reporter, and on July 23, 2026, after more than 35 years in broadcast and over 30 years with Action News, she announced that she would be retiring, with her final broadcast to air on Monday, August 31, 2026; and
WHEREAS, A native of Newtown, Connecticut, Ms. Tynan graduated magna cum laude from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, with dual degrees in journalism and politics, before beginning her broadcast career as a weekend weather anchor and general assignment reporter at WDBJ in Roanoke, Virginia, and later as a weather and news anchor on "Good Morning Las Vegas" at KTNV-TV; and
WHEREAS, Upon joining 6abc in 1995, Ms. Tynan became the station's first-ever weekend meteorologist and went on to earn her seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society, steadily rising through the ranks of the Action News weather team. From weekend and weekday morning weathercaster, to the 5:30 and 11 p.m. broadcasts until, in 2009, she succeeded the retiring Dave Roberts to become WPVI-TV's first female chief meteorologist, a role in which she has served with distinction ever since; and
WHEREAS, Since 2024, Ms. Tynan has anchored the weather for Action News broadcasts at 5, 6, and 11 p.m., as well as the station's streaming-exclusive 6:30 p.m. edition, guiding Philadelphia area viewers through more than three decades of the region's most consequential weather events, including Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy, the Blizzard of 1996, devastating tornadoes, record-breaking heat waves, and historic floods, always with clarity, warmth, and an unwavering commitment to public safety; and
WHEREAS, Beyond the weather desk, Ms. Tynan has been a familiar and cherished face of Philadelphia civic and cultural life, co-hosting beloved local traditions including the 6abc Dunkin' Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade, the 4th of July Parade, the Philadelphia Flower Show, and "Philly on Wheels," as well as the Saturday evening public affairs program "Primetime Weekend," and has maintained a longstanding association with ABC News, making guest appearances on "Good Morning America" and "World News Tonight" and serving as a live correspondent from the Liberty Bell for ABC's "Disney Celebrates America" broadcast; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Tynan has been honored throughout her career, including being named Best Weathercaster by Philadelphia Weekly and Best Weathervane by Philadelphia Magazine, and has remained deeply engaged in community life across the Delaware Valley, lending her voice and time to local charity races and animal welfare causes; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Tynan departs 6abc with the same warmth and gratitude with which she arrived, reflecting on her retirement, "I'm so honored to have been a member of the 6abc Action News team for more than three decades, starting as the station's first-ever weekend meteorologist, then becoming its first female chief meteorologist. I'm proud of the work we've done and thankful to 6abc viewers for trusting me with their weather forecasts"; and
WHEREAS, For more than thirty years, Cecily Tynan has been a steady, trusted, and beloved presence in the homes of millions across the Philadelphia region, informing families before every storm, celebrating with them at every parade, and becoming, in the truest sense, part of the fabric of this City; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and congratulates Cecily Tynan on the occasion of her retirement from 6abc/WPVI-TV Action News, and expresses its deepest gratitude for her more than three decades of distinguished service, her trailblazing role as the station's first female chief meteorologist, and her unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of the people of Philadelphia.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to Cecily Tynan as a token of the Council's esteem and the enduring gratitude of the City of Philadelphia.
