Recognizing and honoring the life of esteemed West Catholic Preparatory High School graduate and rising star basketball player, Akyra Murray, who tragically lost her life in the Orlando night club shooting massacre.

WHEREAS, Akyra Murray, a life-long Philadelphia resident, was the daughter of Albert Murray and Natalie Murray; and

WHEREAS, Akyra Murray attended middle school at Saint Cyprian Catholic School at 6225 Cedar Avenue. Most recently, Akyra graduated from West Catholic Preparatory High School on June 6, 2016; and

WHEREAS, While at West Catholic Preparatory High School, Akyra rose to be the star basketball player for the Lady Burrs women's basketball team. Akyra was a 1,000 point scorer and 2nd Team All-Catholic League player who led her team to consecutive District 12 championships. Akyra was a consummate team player more interested in helping her team win than personal records and accolades; and

WHEREAS, In addition to being a star basketball player, Akyra was a shining example of a West Catholic Preparatory scholar, graduating with honors and third in her class; and

WHEREAS, On May 29, 2016, Akyra Murray signed a letter of intent to attend Mercyhurst University, a Catholic, liberal arts college located in Erie, Pennsylvania. Akyra had received a full scholarship to continue her basketball career at the University; and

WHEREAS, Akyra Murray was committed to being a better person in every aspect of her life: academically, athletically and as a member of our community. Akyra carried herself with great character and dignity, and was known to be a leader amongst others; and

WHEREAS, Akyra Murray tragically passed away on June 12, 2016. Akyra will forever be remembered by her family, classmates, friends and the citizens of Philadelphia; now, therefore, be it
