Authorizing the Committee on Public Property and Public Works and the Committee on Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs to hold hearings to investigate the availability of public land and potential public and private financing for recreation areas for use as skateboarding parks.
Body
WHEREAS, During the last several years there has occurred an enormous explosion of popularity in the sport of skateboarding; and
 
WHEREAS, With the number of skateboard enthusiasts increasing each year the availability of attractive locales where one can skate is limited; and
 
WHEREAS, Unfortunately many of the more interesting and challenging venues are situated on both public and private property in Center City Philadelphia; and
 
WHEREAS, The continuing use of these venues for skateboarding has caused significant damage to pavements, steps, retaining walls, railings located on both public and private property and also to the granite pavers that make up the City Hall apron; and
 
WHEREAS, Although the City has provided supporters with an area in FDR Park to skateboard, there may exist a need for additional venues situated in other parts of the City; now therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby authorizes the Committee on Public Property and Public Works and the Committee on Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs to investigate the availability of public land and potential public and private financing for recreation areas for use as skateboarding parks.
